Silanes have been used for adhesion promotion and surface modification successfully in the past.

Now they are the important components of coating systems, can enhance important paint properties like scratch resistance and corrosion resistance.

Furthermore, silanes are already the key component in the formulation of inorganic-organic hybrid systems.

Silanes & Silicates for Sol-Gel / Aerogel / Xerogel
TEOS products are used in the production of Aerogel blankets for industrial insulation and offer various advantages.

Silanes and silic acid esters are particularly suitable for sol-gel process. Ethyl Silicates PC5420 and PC5424 are usually used. The methoxy groups of the PC5410 hydrolyze relatively quickly when water is added, like all methoxy groups of the silanes. Propoxy groups (PC5430) hydrolyze considerably more slowly than ethoxy groups (PC5410).

Alkylalkoxysilanes
are combined used together with Ethyl Silicates, particularly methyltrialkoxysilane, propyltrialkoxysilane. Long carbon chain silanes maybe added to in the formulation to improve hydrobic properties.

Phenylsilanes can improve the thermal stability of the coating.

Additional hydrophobic and oleophobic effects can be achieved by modifying the sols with small proportions of a fluoroalkylsilane.

Amino silanes can be used as wetting agents in sol-gel systems. The use of aminosilanes usually results in basic sols, which can be cured at room temperature while taking advantage of humid conditions.
